Projects

As a theatre artist, I am always looking to create something new for the stage whether as writer or director or choreographer. One of the most stimulating aspects of the process: COLLABORATION!
I am fortunate to be in collaboration with some of theatre’s truly
remarkable creative minds.

Guests enter the Hush Club, a detailed and fully environmental re-creation of a New York City Speakeasy, circa 1928.

Cafe tables and curtained booths surround a performance space. Once all revelers are settled and libations have been served, our Mistress of Ceremonies,
Topeka McShane, enters and sits atop the piano. She begins to weave an hypnotic spell that will transport us back to the era of jazz and bathtub gin as the combo plays near the oh-so-busy bar.

She’ll tell — no, she’ll show the events of her sordid story… the story of how the swank nightspot brought her back to life.

…a life she’d kill
to keep.

Using “Copperfield style” theatrical illusions,
up-to-the-minute projection technologies, and lighting effects,
the characters in Topeka’s story emerge as if
through a portal in time. But are we then or now, who can say?

A small cast jukebox musical with soft rock songs of the 1970’s. Love and life lessons in the “Me generation.”

Conceived by DJ Salisbury
Book by DJ Salisbury
Music Supervision and arrangements by Mark Fifer

A dance theatre piece based on the French novel La Chienne (1931) about a poor amateur painter who provides a stylish life for his mistress with money embezzled from his workplace. Little does he know that the girl is a prostitute. She is also under the mistaken impression that he is a famous artist. When the chump finds out that she was coached to sell his paintings by her gambling addict pimp, he kills her. The pimp, the only known murder suspect, is hanged. And though the paintings become priceless collector’s pieces, the old sap falls into a demented hobo’s life on the street.
Ironic, edgy, wry, Chump Shag is a “dance play” with physical comedy, artful adagio, and athletic choreography spun with the black humor of a bygone era and shaded by a contemporary viewpoint that comments on the perils of manufactured image and the cost of illusion.
